The Champions Cup kicked off with an exciting and action-packed opening round, highlighted by the unexpected standout performance of Holyn Handley. Handley, who managed to stay bogey-free alongside the powerhouse Kristin Tattar, demonstrated impressive putting skills. She ranked 3rd best in Circle 2 (C2) in regulation, but only 20th in Circle 1 (C1) in regulation. With 11 successful C2 putts and only 5 from C1X, there is significant room for improvement if she can manage to get some closer birdie looks in the upcoming rounds.

Estonian professional disc golfer Kristin Tattar delivered a powerful performance, shooting a -9 after Rd 1, which tied her best score to par on the season. This impressive play resulted in a 2-stroke lead, a position in which Tattar has historically excelled; she boasts a 100% win rate when leading by 2 or more strokes after Round 1. Tattar’s Round 1 stats were equally remarkable: 100% C1X, 100% Scramble, and 40% C2.

Trailing Tattar, Kat Mertsch claimed second place, shooting a -7 with an 88% C1X and 50% C2. Hailey King took third place, shooting -6 with a 100% C1X, while Catrina Allen finished in fourth place, shooting -5.

Tied for fifth place were Ohn Scoggins, Henna Blomroos, Madison Walker, Macie Velediaz, and Holyn Handley, all shooting -3. Meanwhile, Paige Pierce, a dominant force in the sport, struggled in the opening round, finishing 33rd with a 4-over score. Pierce dealt with rotator cuff tendonitis, which adversely affected her performance with a 92% C1X.

The course itself posed challenges for the players, with Hole 17 proving to be the most difficult in Round 1, averaging 0.49 over par. Only two players, Kristin Tattar and Deann Carey, managed to score birdies on the daunting Hole 3.
